One of the most interesting features apple demonstrated during WWDC 2020 was the CarKey feature. This is a digital key to access the vehicle stored in your account, allowing you to open, close, and run compatible vehicles. This feature is available to iPhone and Apple Watch owners who have already installed updates for iOS 13.6 and watchOS 6.2.8.
The first company to install CarKey in its cars was BMW. All models of the series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M, and Z4, released after July 1, 2020, support this function.
Digital CarKey is accessible via the wallet app. Users can share the key with friends or family by simply sending them CarKey via iMessage.
Using a digital key is simple: simply connect your iPhone or Apple Watch to your car door. Then the smartphone should be put on Qi-charging and you can press the ignition button to start the car. If you suddenly lose your smartphone, digital keys may be blocked through your iCloud account.
