Spotify’s Apple Watch apps now allow you to play music or podcasts without connecting to your iPhone. You’ll be able to listen to playlists over a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. This feature appears to be in beta testing during a widespread rollout, so you may not be able to use it for now.
After several users (via 9 to 5 Mac) reported that they could play music directly from the Watch app, Engadget confirmed that the feature was working. In this way, you don’t need to turn off your phone to listen to your favorite songs.
Spotify told Engadget in a statement:
“We are focus on developing the user experiences so that users can listen to Spotify anytime, anywhere, regardless of device or platform”
“After initial testing, we’re now rolling out Spotify’s streaming capabilities on the Apple Watch.”
Two years after Spotify’s release, the Watch app is still not available for offline listening. However, the next time you’re out for a walk or run, you can leave your phone at home and use your LTE-enabled Apple Watch to play Spotify playlists.
